Reinventing Invention: Writing across the Curriculum without WAC

چکیده
Work for this essay began with a problem that will sound all too familiar to most of us in higher education: It has recently dawned upon administrators and faculty in many departments across our university's curriculum that our students can't write. Or more accurately, enough of our students write poorly enough that we have cause for concern. This concern is usually expressed in the unequivocal if vague resolution that something ought to be done. But exactly what? And by whom? Our university has no institutionalized way of trying to solve this problem. There is no single writing course that all students are required to take. Indeed, students at our university can avoid taking any writing course at all. Moreover, it is unlikely that our university will undertake any formal writing across the curriculum program. Such a program existed at our university a decade ago; when funding ran out, interest disappeared. It's unlikely that interest will somehow reappear, especially in these days of budgetary constraints. So what's the best way to respond to the familiar but newly perceived problem of improving students' writing? There is, of course, no magic bullet, no single response that will solve the problem satisfactorily. There's every reason to think that part of the solution lies in providing good writing instruction, both through writing courses and drop-in tutorial work at our school's writing center. However a course in writing (especially if students take only one such course during their college careers) is not adequate to solve the problems we see in

متن کاملWriting Across the Curriculum in College Chemistry: A Practical Bibliography
Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) has been a force in education for more than 25 years. Yet WAC in chemistry might seem still something of a mystery, especially for the chemist new to teaching or to the language studies teacher unfamiliar with conventions of thinking and writing in chemistry. Fortunately, teachers in higher education who wish to explore the uses of writing in chemistry have a...
متن کاملAssessment in Writing Across the Curriculum
The development of WAC programs raised two kinds of assessment questions—concerning assessing students’ work and assessing the success of programs. First, student writing needed to be assessed in a new context. WAC in its very principles challenged the traditional assessment based on general skills displayed in undifferentiated testing situations. WAC highlighted that there were many different ...
متن کاملAdaptation of the ‘Writing Across Curriculum’ Model to the Hong Kong Context
The English language problems in Hong Kong are serious and permeate the whole of the education system. Further, attempts to provide support for teachers and students have yielded relatively minor outcomes. However, it is rarely useful to adopt a language support model from elsewhere without careful adaptation. This paper focuses on support for writing in English at university level, and describ...
متن کاملTheory in WAC : Where Have We Been , Where Are We Going ?
First, a rationale for this chapter: Why talk about "WAC theory"? After all, every chapter in this book deals with "theory" in some fashion since theory provides reasons, based in scholarship and teaching practice, for the methods it describes. The focus of this chapter, however, will be on first principles: the assumptions behind the reasons-the theories beneath the theo ries, if you will. Mo...
